I like Twitter, I love Plurk

Jul 02, 2008 I Non-Asian for Once.

Here in the Philipines at least, Twitter still isn’t as famous a household name than Friendster is. If that’s the case, then Plurk must be… “What the heck is that?!”

Eversince I found out about Twitter, I barely use my Friendster account. Sure, I have more friends in Friendster than in Twitter and although they aren’t really of the same kind, Twitter has been more fun for me. It’s been a heck of a job trying to promote Twitter to my real life friends. I’ve only got one real life friend using Twitter and the rest are friends I’ve met online. They don’t get the whole concept of it and I thought, “You guys are missing out on the best of Web 2.0″ And then Plurk came.

I saw this very colorful screenshot of Plurk in Maki’s (DoshDosh.com) post and so I ended up making an account there. It has basically the same concept as Twitter: telling the world what’s up with you at the moment. The only difference is, Plurk is much more fun (even without friends). Instead of just a big text box asking you to type anything as what Twitter is about, Plurk has this dropdown of “is, loves, likes, shares, gives, hates, wants, wishes, etc” to match the statement that you would type in the text box right beside the dropdown. If you don’t want to use any of those presets, you could go “freestyle” and do away with the old-school blank text box like Twitter. The thing that gives it distinction the most is the timeline. Instead of just a list of twits or in this case, plurks, it displays plurks in a timeline.

I’m not good with describing the interface of such feature-filled and unique site. The best thing to do is make a Plurk account and start Plurking. If you don’t know anything about these stuff  (Twitter, Plurk, Pownce, etc) and if you still have the “Friendster is the only site in the world” principle, just try making an account and you’ll learn (and have fun) eventually. ^_^ Besides, it’s much more fun with friends than it already is.

Plurk is more like slow-motion chat than a micro-blogging platform like Twitter. Plus it’s designed to look more like a toy than a tool. But it’s fun!
