I was never a fan of anime and all I used to watch are Kdramas and Jdoramas but ever since I got hooked to J-culture more than ever, I realized I couldn’t possibly get addicted to J-culture without even watching a single Anime undubbed.
Naruto was the first subbed anime I watched. Since it was the first anime I watched, I thought I was more of a shonen-type. I watched Naruto and refused to watch other anime because of my undying obsession with SasuSaku. But my bestfriend, blockmates, and Toujin have been introducing me to shojo lately.
I discovered that the crunchiest anime in CrunchyRoll is Vampire Knight. It’s the first ever subbed shojo anime I watched and I got hooked. I then realized that the main reason I watch Naruto is because of SasuSaku, in other words: romance with some drama and comedy. And those three are the prominent themes in shojo. Besides, shojo anime are very watchable because they’re so short compared to the epic (and very long) shonen.
My bestfriend introduced me to a weird but cute dance: Hare Hare Yukai. The Toujin heads also made a video of them dancing this epidemic (reminds me of Tell Me). So then I thought that I should give the anime behind it a try since practically everyone knows The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. This one’s not shojo. It’s actually seinen: anime targeted for 18-30 year-old males. And I kind of realized that after watching the first episode alone.
Haruhi is a very weird anime and even the episodes are arranged in a confusing manner but this is what makes it stand out. It’s weird, funny and it got me hooked. I watched and finished it yesterday. It was so addictive that even today, I can’t get enough of it. I’ve been watching AMVs and listening to the OST. I even brought Haruhi to my friendster and multiply accounts.

And oh, I haven’t even done my homework yet. It’s 8pm and I have two papers due tomorrow. Too much Haruhi… really… can’t… move… on….

UP Diliman had its dose of Japanese last month during their Japanese language month: JapFun. The moment I saw the JapFun tarp just along the road to the Sunken Garden - “Ang daya! Bakit sila may gano’n?!” - I immediately regretted not going to UP. What kind of J-addict like me wouldn’t want a month full of Japanese-related events?
But then Kami-sama 神様 might have heard my prayer and so Ateneo would be having its Japanese Studies Program Week 日本フェステイバル on the first week of September. Yatta~! やった~! ^_^ Maybe a week isn’t anything compared to a month but our student population is too small for such a huge event anyway.
JSP Week is a week filled with Japanese-culture events. I was so excited I dragged my blockmate who likes Shoujo anime with me to sign-up in the JSP Department. Being the J-addict that I am, I joined all the events that I could join. And no, I did not join the Sumo Wrestling competition.
I also signed-up for the Karaoke Contest although I’m feeling quite hopeless with it. I’ve never joined a singing competition before and the only time I sing is when we have practicals in Music class back in high school. The only reason I joined is because I love singing Japanese songs. ^_^ It’s a habit I developed everyday when launching my iTunes.
There’d be preliminary screenings before the actual competition and I’m not expecting much but I’ll still try to sing Life by Yui just for fun. ^_^ It’s the 5th ending of Bleach if you guys don’t recognize it.
For my fellow schoolmates who happen to be J-addicts too, as a member of Toujin (Touhou no Yuujin), it’s practically my responsibility to promote this event because as of now, only members of Toujin and students taking JSP classes know about this. ^_^ So, please participate if you can! ^_^ Onegaishimasu~ お願いします *bows*
